MOUNT BUFFALO SPRING RANGER UPDATE

With the snow gone, work is well underway to get ready for the summer season. Work is being carried out across the park to clear tracks and to fix and improve infrastructure. Visitors may experience some disruption to services and access to some areas.

Eurobin FallsAccess above the Lower Eurobin Falls Track will be restricted while work to repair and replace steps is undertaken. Signs will be in place to advise visitors while work is underway. Access
to the Lower Eurobin Falls and Lady Bath Falls
is open to visitors during this time but staff and contractors may be moving along the track with materials and machinery.Dates:  3 weeks 18/10 to 10/11

The Gorge Access to the lower end of The Gorge car park will be restricted while work is completed to upgrade the septic system.

Visitors will still have access to the Stone Hut and the Echo Point & Hang Glider Lookouts while work is being completed. Access to the Underground River will be via View Point Track. There will be increased truck and machinery traffic on Mount Buffalo Road to the Gorge and within the car park area. The toilets may be closed for a short period when the new system is connected but portable toilets will be placed in the car park during this short period of time.Dates: 23/10 to 25/11

‘The Horn Road’ Mount Buffalo Road from Cresta to The Horn. The Seasonal Road Closure on ‘The Horn Road’ remains in place until Thursday before Melbourne Cup weekend. The gravel section of road from Cresta to ‘The Horn’ will be graded before it
reopens. Visitors may experience trucks and machinery traveling on Mount Buffalo Road during this time.

Walking Tracks. Rangers will be systematically making their way along our track network to clear them of fallen timber and brush cut overhanging vegetation. If you would like to report any tracks that have trees down across them please leave a note in the Park Visitor Centre at the ranger station.

CAMPING

There is no hard roof accommodation at Mount Buffalo at this time. (The Chalet is closed) but the Lake Catani camping ground is open from November to the end of April and has Hot Showers, Toilets and tent or small camper sites. There is also a Group Camping site for Schools and Groups over summer / autumn

There are also two hike-in outstation camping areas

* Mt Mc Leod, and

* Rocky Creek (Via the Reservoir)

* Both maximum of 12 persons only


HIKING TO OUTSTATION CAMPING

OUTSTATION CAMPING
Remote bush camping is available for a limited
number of hikers during the summer months at
the Rocky Creek and Mount McLeod Camp-
grounds. These are minimal impact camping sites
designed for fuel stove use only and have pit
toilets. Remote camping is possible for a
maximum of two nights only with a permit issued
from the Rangers.

Camping

Book camping and accommodation hereMount Buffalo is a great location for camping, fees apply. Camping at Lake Catani is available from November to April. Bookings are needed in busy periods

Please note: there will no longer be a ballot for camping at Lake Catani over the Christmas holidays.

Non-Peak Periods:
For the convenience of those wanting to pre-book, which is advisable, sites 22 to 59 can be booked at anytime, up to 12 months in advance. These sites will always show reserved signs.
Sites 2 to 19, are only available for casual arrivals on a first-come, first-served basis. These sites will only show a reserved sign when in use.

Group Camping Area
A special area within the campground (sites 22-29) has been set aside for schools and social groups. These sites must be booked in advance, through the park office; ph (03) 57562328. Only two school or social groups can occupy the campground at any one time. The total number of school or social group campers must not exceed 50 on any one night.

Peak Periods:

Mt Buffalo National Park will not be balloting for peak periods this year, the system will be based on a first-in, first-served basis.

Bookings will open on Monday 1 September at 10am for the peak periods of:
Melbourne Cup weekend
Labour Day weekend
Easter
January School Holidays: bookings must be in week blocks

Summer camping at Lake Catani will close at End April
