Snow Camping
There are three options for winter camping at Mt Buffalo: Lake Catani Campground and the remote campsites at Rocky Creek and Mount McLeod. All three can provide an unforgettable winter experience and an amazing adventure.
Lake Catani Campground
Fires may be lit only in the fireplaces provided and fuel stoves are recommended. Firewood cannot be collected within the National Park so you will need to bring your own!
Fees
During winter there is no camping fee or booking required for Lake Catani Campground, although the Park Rangers appreciate a call if visitors plan to camp. Please phone the Park Office on 03 8427 4025.
Access
Access is via a 1km walk/ski in off the main road along the Lake Catani Rd, or a 2km walk/ski in from The Gorge along the Gorge/Catani track. No vehicle access to the campground is available.
Facilities
The campground showers and flushing toilets are closed during winter, but the pit toilet located behind the stone hut is open. Water is available from Lake Catani but is not potable, so you must boil or treat to drink or provide your own water.
Stone Shelter Hut
The stone shelter hut can be used for cooking and shelter from the weather.
If the fire places are used please ensure that the fires are extinguished before leaving the hut (and are not left unattended)
Camping in the hut is prohibited.
More Information
Rocky Creek and Mount McLeod Remote Campsites
The remote campsites at Mount McLeod and Rocky Creek are open during winter and offer a rewarding remote winter camping experience.
Fees
A small fee is charged to use the Rocky Creek and Mount McLeod Campsites, you can book and pay online via Parks Victoria at www.parkstay.vic.gov.au/book-your-stay
Access
The walk into these campsites is made longer during winter, because the Reservoir Road closes at the main Mount Buffalo Road. Therefore, anyone intending to camp at either of these campsites needs to be well prepared for camping in Alpine areas and a long walk/ski.
Facilities
Both campsites have a pit toilet. There are no other facilities. Please remember that firewood cannot be collected within the National Park.
