The Horn
Proudly Mount Buffalo's highest point at 1,723m elevation The Horn offers 360 degree views of the Victorian High Country and on a clear day many alpine peaks are visible including Mount Bogong, Mount Feathertop, Mount Buller and even Australia's highest peak Mt Kosciusko in NSW.
The road to The Horn car park and picnic hut is gravel beyond Cresta Valley and is suitable for two wheel drive vehicles but not buses or cars with trailers or caravans. In winter the road is closed at Cresta Valley and becomes Mount Buffalo's premier cross country ski trail, with 3.2 km up and then a fast downhill return.
The Horn pinnacle is a 30 min uphill walk from The Horn car park and provides 360 degree views of the plateau and the other High Country mountain peaks in the distance.
Sunsets and Bogong Moths
The Horn pinnacle lookout is a favorite location to view the sunset and when you are walking back down the stairway in the dark in summer you will experience the spectacle of millions of Bogong Moths streaming out of the caves and crevices where they hide in great bunches during the day.
These moths attracted the first nations tribes to the mountain to feast on this easily collected bounty of protein, and in modern times these migratory insects feed numerous small animals, reptiles and birds. The moths arrive from Queensland in late spring and head back north when the weather cools in Autumn.
The Horn is also a favorite location for viewing the stars and planets after dark, so bring your telescope if you are into astronomy.
Cycling
The Horn car park is the unofficial cycling summit of the full Mount Buffalo climb, despite the 7 Peaks segment ending around 10km earlier at The Chalet. The gravel road past Cresta Valley makes an interesting final leg of the climb up the mountain.
