The Mount Buffalo National Park is located in Victoria's High Country, about 60km south east of Wangaratta in North East Victoria. The park offers walking tracks, camping, kayaking and swimming on Lake Catani, rock climbing and abseiling on the granite boulders and gorge walls, historic sightseeing at The Chalet, spectacular views of the Victorian High Country, winter snowplay at Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley, and more.

Did you know...?

  • Explorers Hume and Hovell named the mountain from afar in 1824, from its supposed resemblance to a buffalo.
  • The highest point on Mount Buffalo is The Horn, at 1723m elevation. The majority of the plateau is at 1300m-1500m elevation.
  • Mount Buffalo was first visited by local Aboriginal tribes who gathered each summer to feast on Bogong Moths.
  • The first ski tow in Australia was installed at Dingo Dell in the 1930s.
  • There is over 90km of walking trails mapped and signposted at Mount Buffalo, including The Big Walk from the bottom to the top!
  • Summer temperatures average 19 degrees during the day and around 10 degrees overnight - perfect weather for setting up camp at Lake Catani Campground.
  • Ambient outdoor temperature drops by around 1 degree celsius for every 100m you gain in altitude, which means if it's 35 degrees in Bright, it'll be in the mid-20s on Mount Buffalo. No wonder the locals flock to the swimming holes in the heat of summer.
  • The famous Mount Buffalo Chalet is over 100 years old and tourists were originally transported to it by horse, then by train and bus. When it was first built it was unheated.
