If you are looking to get into backcountry skiing, snowboarding, splitboarding, or just want to avoid the lifts for a change then the old ski runs at Cresta Valley are the place for you.

While the area to the right of the old valley chair (Centre of the ski area) is for snow play, tobogganing and cross country skiing. The blue and black runs to the left of the chair provide great entry-level backcountry downhill skiing and boarding opportunities. Even some challenging terrain on the old international line.

Skin or Snowshoe up and then Ski or Board Down

If you are a beginner to backcountry the rules are fairly simple "Don't walk on the Skiable Snow". Hike or skin up next to one of the boundary tree lines to avoid damaging the good lines. Once you have a step line in place after a few runs you will find the ascent back up easier.

Great Place to Build Skills Before Venturing Into the High Country

With good car parking close to the ski area, phone communications and easy access this area is great for building ski and board skills before starting to venture out into the Back Country at Hotham, Falls Creek and in the Alpine National Park. It's also an easy access area for any local or visitor to get a few turns in without having to drive for miles or to pay resort entry fees etc (Free entry to the National Park).

Mountain Safety Collective

We recommend that anyone looking to become a part of the growing group of backcountry enthusiasts join the Mountain Safety Collective where there is great information available to help you build your skills and knowledge to ensure safe adventures in our amazing backcountry snow terrain.
