Cresta Valley
The wide open plains of Cresta Valley provide a year-round experience for visitors to Mount Buffalo. In summer it's a trailhead for a number of short and longer walks, and with winter snowfall the valley becomes a network of quality cross country skiing trails. The views of the Hump and the Horn in the distance are spectacular at sunset.
Winter
Cresta Valley is a naturally sheltered bowl below The Horn about 12 kilometres across the plateau from the Chalet. Prior to the December 2006 fires, Cresta Valley offered a 26 room ski lodge, ski lifts, restaurant, cafe and ski school. Sadly none of the buildings have been replaced since they were lost.
Thankfully the snow still falls and the cross country trails are well-used every winter by families and enthusiasts. The ruins of the old ski lifts can be seen on the slopes in front of the car park and this area is used for tobogganing, snowplay and backcountry hike up ski or board down snow sports in winter. Grooming is completed by Parks staff as required.
There is a toilet at the car park, some picnic tables and around 25 car parking spaces.
Green Season
The Dixons Falls, Back Wall and South Buffalo hiking trails have their trailheads at Cresta Valley. Each walk is well signposted.
