The wide plains, granite boulders and small valleys of Mount Buffalo create an interesting place to cross country ski during winter. When the snow arrives the trail network around Cresta Valley is transformed into an ideal XC ski location for beginners and intermediate skiers.

Mountain Entry

There is no charge to access Mount Buffalo at any time or to access the XC trails at Cresta Valley.

Cresta Valley

Cresta Valley is a naturally sheltered bowl below The Horn about 12 kilometres across the plateau from the Chalet. Prior to the December 2006 fires, Cresta Valley offered a 26 room ski lodge, ski lifts, restaurant, cafe and ski school. Sadly none of the buildings have been replaced since they were lost.

Thankfully the snow still falls and the cross-country trails are well-used every winter by families and enthusiasts. Grooming is completed by Parks staff as required.

Licensed Tour Operators still run Cross Country lessons and tours from Cresta Valley.

Dingo Dell

Most of the cross-country skiing is at Cresta Valley network, but beginner skiing and lessons are also available at Dingo Dell.

Hire Equipment

There are no toboggan hire, snow-wear or cross-country ski hire facilities on Mount Buffalo, so you'll need to hire your toboggan, outerwear, snow boots and cross-country skiing equipment in Myrtleford, Porepunkah or Bright before you travel up the mountain.

Lessons and Tours

Licensed Tour Operators run various short, half-day and full-day cross-country skiing lessons and XC skiing tours on Mount Buffalo during winter. Check the Tours and Adventures page for more information.
